GOP AG candidate Jeanine Pirro was supposed to be at Ground Zero this morning to call for the restoration of the death penalty, which was reinstated in New York in 1995 (making good on a campaign promise by then newly-minted Gov. George Pataki) and declared unconstitutional by the state’s highest court in 2004.

Pirro’s campaign just called off that press conference due to an unexplained “scheduling conflict.” No new date or time was given. She’s still on tap to be endorsed by the PBAs of Nassau and Suffolk counties at the Supreme Court building in Mineola at 2:30 p.m.

Since she brought it up, however, now seems as good a time as any to discuss the death penalty and the AG’s race.

Democratic gubernatorial frontrunner/AG Eliot Spitzer supports the death penalty - a topic that was a key issue in his early AG runs, and one he used to deflect claims in 1998 by then-GOP incumbent AG Dennis Vacco that he was “too liberal.”
