LUBBOCK, Texas - A federal jury agreed to compensate two former Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center pharmacy professors who said they were paid less than their male colleagues.

Lucinda Miller and Elaine King Miller sued the school in 2000 alleging they were victims of gender discrimination under the federal Equal Pay Act.

After five hours of deliberation Wednesday, the jury rejected some of the women’s claims but awarded $15,000 to Miller and $43,000 to King Miller to “fairly and reasonably” compensate the women for gender-based pay inequities.

“I’m happy we prevailed,” King Miller said. “People have to stand up to this injustice.”

The jury did not agree with the women’s claims that they were denied tenure because they are female.

The jury also rejected a claim by King Miller, who was diagnosed as legally blind in 1999, that she was denied reasonable accommodations for her condition under the Rehabilitation Act.

School officials declined to comment.
