There really is so much I don’t know.
So the past 2 hours or so I’ve been reading Cradle to Cradle a little bit, and upon only reading a chapter or so, my mind has gone racing! and i’ve been looking up online information about greenpeace, the green party, and looking up minors at IUPUI having to do with enviroment, ecology, sustainability, health, etc. Its like lately my mind has been opened up to this whole new world, which is actually the world we live in. Since birth our eyes have been so blinded and we’ve been brainwashed by the government, by corporate advertising and media, and drug and health companies. it really is true. if everyone knew that half the things we use everyday are probably contributing to early deaths, then some corporations would be absolutely screwed, and the government is afraid that our entire economy would crumble. but really it just needs to be approached from another perspective, and some people have been working on this for YEARS, i’m surprised people dont here more about it. Making everything a renewable or biodegradable resource that is safe and useful is not a farfetched idea! I find all this information extremely enlightening, but at the same time almost discouraging, because we really are killing ourselves and our environment just by our daily practices, and that is not going to change overnight.
Some somewhat disheartening facts:
- most fabric chairs contain mutagenic materials, heavy metals, and dangerous chemicals and dyes that are often labeled hazardous by regulators, except when they are released to the public
- computers contain more than a thousand different kinds of materials, including toxic gases, toxic metals (such as cadmium, lead, and mercury) acids, plastics, chlorinated and brominated substances, and the dust from some printer toner cartridges has been found to contain nickel, cobalt and mercury, substances harmful to humans.
Sheesh!
What are we doing to ourselves?! and our world? I dont think i’m going to become an overnight environmentalist or anything….but I am going to think before I buy things from now on, and especially when I have my own house someday, i think i will try my best to make it eco-friendly. and i will continue to educate myself. i dont think i will ever protest, i dont think protesting really works, but educating the public works. Perhaps when i go to art school, when i graduate i can use my skills to make eco-educational designs and advertisements, and use eco-friendly materials in my artwork. Who would have ever thought that someday I would care so much?
