New CQ analysis: “Congressional candidate fundraising activity in 2005 shattered any notion that it was an ‘off’ election year. Campaigns are commencing earlier and earlier, and fundraising activity has been front-loaded, too.”

“House incumbents, challengers and open-seat candidates are more strongly funded than ever.”

“According to FEC data, 67 House members had at least $1 million cash on hand at the beginning of 2006 — or nearly twice the 34 House members who had hoarded that much campaign money as the 2004 election year began. Meanwhile, 12 challengers to House incumbents reported more than $400,000 cash-on-hand at the beginning of this year. Two years ago, just one House challenger had banked that much money.”
