[From Loaded Mouth - Nostalgic for a New Tomorrow]
I’m still styimed by how to handle this Rove situation. I know I’ve already made two posts with different opinions on the matter, and I’ve re-read both of them… Still not sure where I stand. On one hand (and I think a lot of these feelings are being caused by peer pressure), I want to join my fellow lefty brethren and demand Rove’s ouster because I think that’s the proper course of action. But I’m worried about Rove’s motives; chiefly worried about whether or not calling for his head is what Rove himself wants us to do.
We must not forget that Rove is a potitical genius. I don’t like the guy, nor does anybody else on the left, but we must not lump in dislike with disrespect. We have to respect Rove’s intelligence. We cannot successfully counter him by underestimating him.
I’m still baffled by the fact that Rove has made himself a public figure of late, which is something that he almost never does. And the only conclusion I can come to is that Rove wants the limelight on him because that would shine it away from the Downing Street memos, where the press has been slowly gaining focus. And think about it, Rove is the perfect guy to be receiving mass amounts of pot shots from the left right now: He’ll never run for political office anyways, he’ll never be fired. This controversy will cause absolutely no damage upon his head. None. In the meantime, while the press focuses on the left’s attacks against Rove, who’s going to be left to tell the press that they should be reporting the DSM?
More and more in my mind, this is looking like a classic Rove-ian tactic: When there’s a negative story about the Bush, find a way to take the focus off that story. In the past, Rove has launched attacks directly against the sources of these stories, but since the source comes from Britain and Blair’s government refuses to lie and discredit them, Rove can’t rely on his usual “discredit the source” MOD. So he’s trying a different method, and the plot twist here is that he’s directly involving himself in his own plot. I tend to believe that he’s doing such because he wants to throw the left off-balance because deploying himself as a magnet for criticism is so unexpected; and he knows that no professional harm will be checked against him for doing this.
Hmmm, well.. I guess I’m sure about my position on this now. Calling for Rove’s ouster is the morally proper thing to do, but I maintain that we shouldn’t because Rove is propping himself up as a distraction. Ignore him, and keep focusing on the real story: the Downing Street memos.
[13:28 Update] I haven’t found an article on the web to confirm this yet, but I heard on the radio that Bush will be holding a prime time press conference on Iraq next Tuesday. “Operation Change The Topic” appears to be catching it’s full stride, so we’ve got to tackle the sprinter and beat the crap out of them before they escape with the public’s attention.
“When you’re enemies drowning, throw them an anvil.” Bush is drowning, folks. Let’s drop a fucking mountain on him.
